Cruise ships arrive back to port early in the morning (6-7 a.m.) and debarking can take 2-3 hours from then. For that reason, we’d suggest the earliest to schedule your flight is 11 a.m. We will say that we’ve caught flights considerably earlier, however. Consider arriving a few days early or stay a few days after your cruise and explore our dynamic, multi-cultural paradise.
Best ways to get around Fort Lauderdale
It is the start of the festival season when the region hosts the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, Las Olas Art Fair, Tortuga Music Festival and more. There is also lots to do on land, including hiking and wildlife viewing at the Everglades National Park. If you are planning a cruise from PortMiami, we outline the Best Ways to Get from the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port.

Cruise Terminal 4 Fact Sheet
Some companies will quote a very low price but then tack on all of these additional costs once you arrive. Given the distance from the airport to the cruise terminal, be sure to plan your flights appropriately if you plan to fly in the day of your cruise. If you check-in the traditional way (or have some loose ends to tie up before boarding), you’ll stand in line and wait for an open check-in agent. Many terminals at Port Everglades have dozens of check-in stations, so the line moves quickly. Here you will assign a payment method for your onboard account, get your room key, and then board the ship. Your time with an agent will only take a few minutes, and then you’ll be ready to start your cruise.
Location
From shuttle to ship, the whole process took about 10 minutes. Enjoy a post-cruise or pre-cruise stay in one of the many Fort Lauderdale hotels before or after your vacation. Stay at resort-like Port Everglades hotels near the terminals because the options are plentiful. Our favorite brand of hotels is Marriott because they offer the best perks for loyalty, including room upgrades depending on your loyalty level and free wi-fi for all Marriott Bonvoy guests. We also find their customer service to be the best out of any hotels we stay at time and again. Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) is the closest airport to Port Everglades.

Of the three ships, Harmony was the newest but also the biggest - even though by only 1 ft (30 cm) and 1700 tons. Harmony OTS was finishing her inaugural Transatlantic repositioning crossing. Since 2011, the cruiseferry company BALEARIA Caribbean provides daily crossings from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport (Grand Bahama Island). In August 2019, the company started a fast-ferry service from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini Island Bahamas (crossing time ~2 hours). If you are traveling with a larger party, you might want to reserve a private shuttle.
You’ll want to park and then take the free shuttle to the terminal. Many times, it makes sense to buy the cruise line's bus transfer from the airport to port and vice versa. The airport is so close to Port Everglades -- a 10-minute drive -- that it makes sense to simply grab a taxi or Uber. It will cost less, and you won't need to wait around as the cruise line fills the bus with passengers.
Beware that the drive from the MIA airport to Port Everglades can take between 45 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic. It may be best to pre-arrange a private car service so the cost doesn't vary based on traffic, which can add up. The next closest major airport is in Miami, which is about 30 miles away from Port Everglades. Paid shuttles, ride shares like Uber and Lyft, and private transportation are all options here. In 2016, the cruise port completed pilot testing of APC kiosks (abbrev "Automated Passport Control") in 2 terminals. This is yet another CBP initiative to fasten the passenger inspection process.
Driving to Port EvergladesIf you are already in South Florida, then you can simply drive to the port. One thing that you’ll need to keep in mind is if you are sailing from Northport (Terminals 2 or 4) or from Midport (Terminals 18-29). Depending on your cruise terminal, you want to use a different entrance to get into the port so that you can get to your ship faster.
Fort Lauderdale has a big advantage over many other cruise ports in that it’s literally just a few minutes from the airport. If you are flying from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, you can get from the cruise port to the airport in 10 minutes. If you are flying from Miami, however, expect the ride to take at least 45 minutes, and upwards of an hour in heavy traffic.
Thankfully, given the location its relatively simple to get there. Below, we have provided directions to the port and your best options for reaching the port. Many area hotels provide transportation between Port Everglades and the hotel. Though it’s not very direct, it's possible to get to the port by bus if you’re up for a bit of a trek.
Depending on the driver, you might have to load your own luggage into the vehicle. Shared Ride Services are probably the most popular form of transportation in recent years. This is always our preferred transportation method when on vacation.

Terminal 29Terminal 29 is a bit out of the way from the other terminals at the southernmost end of the cruise port facilities. It’s an older terminal, but still perfect for getting on the ship. One issue is that the official port parking garage is a bit of a trek from here.
If you arrive at FLL early in the morning and need breakfast before heading to the port, try The Floridian Diner (1410 East Las Olas Boulevard). Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you can order your favorite egg dishes, pancakes, waffles, breakfast wraps and more. At dinnertime, they serve pork chops, country-fried steak, St. Louis ribs and fried chicken, among other hearty plates.
While the 4,200-square-foot facility is designed to provide services to crewmembers, cruisers are also welcome. You can shop at the on-site convenience shop, access free Wi-Fi and visit the chapel. While there are public buses in Fort Lauderdale, there's no easy or convenient way to transit from the airport to the port. Metro Shuttle Service costs $8 to $15 per person for the ride from FLL to Port Everglades, depending on the number of people in your group. The more people on your reservation, the lower your per person rate.
